MOUNT VERNON — Gina Karen Stewart, 64, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away on July 3, 2023 at her residence holding her daughter’s hand. She was born September 15, 1958 in East Saint Louis, Illinois to Clarence Gilbert and Emma Annalee (Hale) Cathers. Gina married Kenneth Stewart and they were together for thirty-two years before he preceded her in death in 2021.
Gina is survived by her daughter, Misty Smith and husband, Travis of Mount Vernon, Illinois; grandchild, Cody Rector of Mount Vernon, Illinois; great-grandchildren, Leah Kupres; stepchildren, Kenny Stewart and wife, Lori of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Lee Stewart and wife, Tanya of Nashville, Illinois, and Tammy Stewart of Mount Vernon, Illinois; siblings, Tracy Stone of Granite City, Illinois, Kevin Cathers of Jacksonville, Illinois, Shannon Booher and husband, Grant of Adairville, Kentucky, Adam Cathers and wife, Christina Roodhouse, Illinois, and Kathy Gibson of Fresno, California; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her parents and husband, Gina was preceded in death by her brothers, Terry Cathers and Michael Cathers and sister, Peggy Long.
Gina was a Christian and believed in God. She was a member of the Sportsmans for many years and worked there in years past. Gina enjoyed doing her own yard work and cherished the time planting flowers. She cherished camping and fishing with her family and friends. Gina enjoyed spending time with her grandson and great-granddaughter. She could fix anything… in her own way and was the rock of her family. She was big-hearted and free-spirited and would light up the room with her presence. Gina enjoyed watching soap operas and was devoted to her fur babies. She will be missed by all who knew her.

A Graveside Service will be held Tuesday, July 11, 2023 at 10:00 am at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn, Illinois with Pastor David Houseworth officiating. Interment will follow. Memorials may be made in Gina’s honor to Hughey Funeral Home for funeral expenses.
