JEFFERSON COUNTY — Jefferson Fire responded around 2:15 Saturday afternoon to a report of a 20-foot tall pile of sawdust and multiple piles of wood on fire at a business northeast of Mt. Vernon.
According to reports, an employee of K.V. Trees on North Iris Lane found the fire and attempted to put out the blaze with a bulldozer. However, neighbors spotted the smoke from the fire and called the fire department.
Firefighters with Mt. Vernon City, Kell, Centralia Fire District and Wayne City provided mutual aid at the scene while Woodlawn and Waltonville manned the Jefferson Fire Station in the event of another call.
Jefferson firefighters were able to get water to fight the blaze from a pond on the property.
Jefferson Fire reports the cause of the fire has not been determined.
