FRANKLIN COUNTY — A 53-year-old Franklin County baseball coach is free on bond after being arrested for allegedly assaulting a special needs man at a Marion park.
According to reports from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Richard Todd Poe was arrested on Thursday at the Franklin County Jail for aggravated battery.
Poe is reportedly the owner of Future Swings in Marion, a hitting instruction facility just off Illinois Highway 13 where he gave private lessons. He reportedly had earlier worked as a scout for several professional baseball players.
Reports indicate Poe allegedly assaulted a special needs male earlier this month at the West Frankfort Community Park. A warrant was issued Wednesday for his arrest and he was taken into custody Thursday on a Class 3 felony charge of aggravated battery in a public place.
Court records say the victim was a mentally disabled adult and that Poe grabbed the man and kicked his legs out from under him, causing the man to fall to the ground.”
Poe’s bond was set at $40,000 and he was released from the Franklin County Jail after posting 10 percent cash bail.
An arraignment date in the case remains to be set.
