WASHINGTON COUNTY — A 37-year-old Belleville man has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run last week of a young child in Okawville.

According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Joseph R. Shelton was arrested Thursday on a warrant charging him of leaving the scene of an accident, and failure to report within half an hour an accident involving injury or death. Charges are reportedly pending for another individual involved in the case.

Reports say the Washington County Dispatch Center received a call around 9:06 p.m. Tuesday, June 13, of a hit-and-run accident in Okawville involving a juvenile.

Shelton was formally charged Friday in Washington County Court with Class 4 felony leaving the scene of a crash involving injury or death and Class 2 felony failure to report a crash involving an injury.

Bond in the case was set at $30,000 and he was released after posting $1,000 cash, with the other $2,000 due within 30 days of his release.

Shelton was advised of the charges against him and the possible penalties if convicted. He was ordered to have no contact with the alleged victims in the case and was ordered to return July 18 for a preliminary hearing and a first appearance with his court-appointed attorney.
