JEFFERSON COUNTY — An earlier noted police presence on Interstate 64 between Woodlawn and Mt. Vernon reportedly stems from an incident early this morning where an Illinois State Police trooper was shot.

According to preliminary information released from ISP, Troop 10 units responded to a motorist assist around 3 a.m. this morning at eastbound mile marker 72 near Mt. Vernon.

During the incident, an altercation reportedly occurred and the male suspect displayed a firearm.

Gunfire was exchanged between the suspect and the Troopers. A Trooper, a 16-year veteran of ISP, was injured during the incident and is being treated at a regional hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect was killed during the incident and an ISP Division of Internal Investigation is leading an active and ongoing investigation and no further information is available.
