CENTRALIA — Alvin J. Holthaus, 82, of Centralia, passed away Thursday, April 27, 2023, at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri.

He was born March 12, 1941, in Breese, the son of Joseph Holthaus and Janina (Tyl) Holthaus. He married Mary Salatino on December 27, 1971, and she survives.

In addition to his wife of 52 years: Mary Holthaus of Centralia, he is also survived by his two children: Timothy Steven Prodyma of Centralia and Therese Ann (Prodyma) Sakowicz and husband Caz of Centralia; two grandchildren: Nicole Marie Grantham of Centralia and Zachary Keith Grantham of Jacksonville, FL; one great-grandson: Daxton; three brothers and a sister: David Holthaus and wife Margaret of Highland, JoAnn Kierkenmeier of Trenton, Walter Holthaus and wife Bessy of California, and Eddie Holthaus and wife Donna of Highland; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Henry Holthaus and Charles Holthaus, and a sister: Dolores Schneider.

Alvin owned and operated Holthaus Tree Stump Removal for 50 years. He would also help the City of Centralia with the removal of stumps all over town. He was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Centralia. Alvin cherished the time he spent working and also with his family.

A Memorial Service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 7, 2023, at Sutherland-Garnier Funeral Home in Centralia with Father Steven Pautler officiating. Visitation will be held Sunday, May 7, 2023, from 1 p.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mary Holthaus and will be accepted at the Sutherland-Garnier Funeral Home at 235 North Sycamore Street Centralia, Illinois 62801, 618-532-3523, who is honored to be of service to the Holthaus family.
