MOUNT VERNON — The Mt. Vernon Police Department is investigating a Tuesday night shooting that sent two men to the hospital with gunshot wounds.
According to Police Chief Trent Page, officers responded around 6:30 Tuesday night to a report of shots fired at the Westmont Apartment Complex on South 34th Street.
When officers arrived they found no victims or suspects in the area but did locate shell casings in and around the parking lot area.
As they were investigating, they received a report from SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital that two individuals with gunshot wounds were brought by personal vehicle to the Emergency Room. Both victims were ultimately airlifted to a St. Louis area hospital.
Neither the conditions of the two victims nor their identities are being released at this time as the investigation is ongoing.
Detectives on the case ultimately uncovered two persons of interest in the case and determined one of them lives in the Garden Glen Apartments. Detectives worked with Jefferson County State’s Attorney Sean Featherstun to secure a search warrant for the apartment.
Then at 12:30 Wednesday morning, the MVPD/JCSO High-Risk Team helped secure the subjects apartment for detectives to conduct a search. The subject was taken to the Mt. Vernon Police Department for questioning and was later released pending further investigation.
