Glenn N. Womack, 97, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 5:50 pm November 5, 2022 at SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon.

He was born February 14, 1925 in Mount Vernon to the late Glenn and Lillian (Akers) Womack, Sr. Glenn married Margie L.(Ross) Womack.

She preceded him in death on January 29, 2015.  Glenn is survived by his sons,  Mike (Vickie) O’Dea, John Womack, Eric (Jolyn) Womack; grandsons, Chris O’Dea, Michel (Janice) O’Dea III, Justin Womack, and Josh Womack; great-grandson, Matthew O’Dea; sisters, Norma Glen Verleni and Patricia Myers; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and beloved wife, Glenn was preceded in death by his grandparents that raised him, Zacceus and Nora D. (Leatherman) Akers; siblings, Carl Nelson Womack and Grace JoAnn Womack; and ex-stepmother, Opel Edna Weathorford.

Glenn attended the following schools: Benjamin Franklin in Mount Vernon, Enfield Public School, Enfield Community High School (where he participated on the track team), Mount Vernon Township High School, the Vocational School in Mount Vernon, as well as numerous schools in the Army and Rend Lake College.

Glenn proudly served his country in the United States Army in Korea during World War II. He was a paratrooper for 23 years and a jumpmaster who took 185 jumps. Glenn was in the Special Forces, 503 Parachute Regimental Combat Team during World War II (The Rock), 82nd Airborne Division, and the 101st AirBorne Division (Screaming Eagles). Glenn was also a Knight Templar for the Masons, Ainad Shriners, American Legion, Amvets, King City Lodge (I.A.M.A.W.), Cub Scouts (First Baptist Church), and spent many hours tutoring and mentoring.

He enjoyed gardening, stamp collecting, talking, exploring, sharing knowledge and experience, learning other languages, reading, and doing crossword puzzles. After retiring from the Army, Glenn worked for the Saint Louis Post Office and for Precision National Corporation.

A Visitation will be held Thursday, November 10, 2022 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. A Funeral Service will begin at 1:00 pm with Reverend Steve Edwards officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Mount Vernon. Full Military Honors will be conducted at the cemetery by the Fort Leonard Wood Honor Detail.
