David L. Tate, 82, of Mt. Vernon, passed away at 12:20 p.m., Friday, October 21, 2022, at Mt. Vernon Countryside Manor.
He was born November 21, 1939, in Jefferson County, Illinois, the son of Lewis and Flossie (Beal) Tate. On April 2, 1959, in Mt. Vernon, he married Lois Faye Ellis, and she survives in Mt. Vernon.
Mr. Tate attended a one-room school, until Field School opened, and he was a graduate of Mt. Vernon Township High School. He was a veteran, serving in the United States Navy, most notably aboard the USS Noah, as part of the crew that picked up astronaut John Glenn. He was a member of the Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife of more than 60 years, Lois Tate, of Mt. Vernon, he is survived by a son, Allen Tate and wife Michelle of Mt. Vernon; daughters, Joanie Cooper and husband Alan, and Stephanie Tate of Mt. Vernon; grandchildren, Travis Tate and wife Sierra, Amanda Haley, Jeffrey Cooper and wife Nicole, Jeremy Tate and wife Nicole, Michael Cooper and wife Emily, and David Adam Tate; great-grandchildren, Tyler Tate and wife Maddie, Jaxon Tate, Kynley Tate, Branson Tate, Elizabeth (Izzy) Cooper, Iris Cooper, Isabella Tate, and Allena Collins; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; great-grandson, Braden Tate; brothers, Robert, Charles, and James Tate; and sisters, Ninabelle Tate, Evelyn Staley, and Mary Ann Yelverton.
Funeral Services for Mr. Tate will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 28, 2022, at Osborn Funeral Home in Dix, with Rev. Elton Storey officiating. Burial will follow at Harmony Cemetery, with Graveside Military Rites accorded by American Legion, Post #141, of Mt. Vernon. Visitation will be held Thursday, October 27, 2022, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., at the funeral home.
