MOUNT VERNON — Several residents in the 800 block of South 25th Street in Mt. Vernon were asked to stay inside, Wednesday after a backhoe reportedly struck a one-and-a-quarter-inch high-pressure natural gas line.
According to Mt. Vernon Fire Chief Kevin Sargent, the call came in around 4:20 p.m. Wednesday and affected an isolated area of town. Ameren was notified and quickly responded to dig up and repair the broken line.
Sargent says firefighters were on the scene for about two hours.
