Jere Thomas Shaw, 82, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away on July 12, 2022 at him home in Mount Vernon, Illinois with his family by his bedside.
He was born September 25, 1939 in West Frankfort, Illinois to the late Floyd and Myrna (Roth) Shaw. He grew up and attended school in Benton, Illinois, graduating form Benton High School in 1957.Jere first married Judith Johnson of Chicago, Illinois in 1962. This marriage was blessed with two sons. In 1994, Jere married Karen (Blood) Scheppel, who survives.Jere is also survived by his son, Jeffrey and wife, Lydia; step daughter, Stephanie Scheppel Harness; grandson, Justin Shaw; step grandson, Jayton Harness, all of Mount Vernon, Illinois; nephew, Lannie Shaw and wife, Julie of Waltonville; niece, Charlotte Bradley and husband, Robert of Mount Vernon, Illinois; and several cousins. In addition to both parents, Jere was preceded in death by his son, Jeret Shaw; brother, Bob Shaw; and sister, Charlotte Shaw. Jere was raised in the Methodist faith and attended First United Methodist Church in Mount Vernon and Elk Prairie Christian Church in Nason, Illinois After completion of his education, he spent his career in education with the first chapter as a school teacher in Jefferson County. He then moved to a position with the Illinois State Board of Education, from which he retired. His lifelong interests were in current affairs, history, and politics. He spent ten years serving on the Rend Lake Conservancy District Board. His most recent endeavor was serving on the Jefferson County Board. Jere loved meeting new people and never met a stranger. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Following cremation, burial of ashes will take place at Sunday, July 17, 2022 at 1:00 pm at Kirk Cemetery in Ina, Illinois with Pastor Bill Degenhart officiating the memorial service.
