SALEM, IL — Bond was set at $100,000 Tuesday in Marion County Court for a 31-year-old Salem man charged with vehicular hijacking and violating an order of protection stemming from two separate incidents. According to Salem police, they first responded to a call July 2 from a resident of a Mills Crossing apartment who said she had an order of protection against Jacob Erwin and he had just forced his way into her apartment.
Erwin had left the scene before police arrived but after they arrived, officers confirmed the door to the apartment was damaged
Erwin reportedly returned to the apartment the following day as the protected person was getting into her car. He’s alleged to have then pushed her into the passenger seat of her car, while he climbed into the driver’s seat and drove away. He then allegedly pulled over on Missouri Avenue after being confronted by some of the alleged victim’s family. He then reportedly fled the area on foot and police ultimately located him hiding in the Burger King bathroom.
He was taken into custody for alleged violation of an order of protection, unlawful restraint, criminal damage and criminal trespass to property as well as stalking. He was formally charged Tuesday with Class 1 felony vehicular hijacking and misdemeanor violation of a protection order. Erwin was advised Tuesday of the charges against him, was ordered to abstain from drugs and alcohol with random testing, and reminded to have no contact with the two women listed in the original protection order.
Erwin remains in the Marion County Jail with a first appearance with his attorney scheduled for July 19.
