MT. VERNON, IL — A 67-year-old Mt. Vernon man has been found mentally fit to stand trial in Jefferson County Court on multiple counts possessing child pornography.
A fitness evaluation was performed earlier this month on Roy Staley after the court found a bona fide doubt as to him fitness to stand trial.
During status hearing Tuesday, the court found Staley fit to stand trial based upon the findings in the evaluation.
Staley was arrested in April on seven felony child pornography offenses. According to Deputy Detective Bobby Wallace, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office received a tip through its mobile app claiming Staley had child pornography on multiple devices.
An investigation was launched, and a warrant was issued to search Staley’s apartment.
Wallace says several files were subsequently located on at least one of Staley’s electronic devices and he was taken into custody.
He now faces two Class X felony charges of child pornography of a victim under the age of 13, four Class 2 felony counts of possessing child pornography of a victim under the age of 13, and one Class 2 felony charge of possessing a child pornography movie or video.
