SOUTHERN ILLINOIS (WBC/DANA COMM.) — An excessive heat warning continues for our listening area until 8 p.m. tomorrow as a heat wave sweeps across the Midwest.
Most of Illinois continues to see sweltering temperatures throughout midweek. The National Weather Service says record-setting heat will expand through areas of the Midwest with dangerous heat expected for around a third of the country’s population.
Heat index values will reach 105 to 110 today and 95 to 105 on Wednesday. There will be little relief from the heat at night, with low temperatures forecast to stay in the upper 70s to around 80 degrees. The effects of heat stress can increase with prolonged exposure over consecutive days.
Extreme heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat-related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities.
During extreme heat, make sure to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.
Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances but to do so in extreme heat can be lethal.
Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, OSH Arecommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments.
Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency. Call 9 1 1.
