EAST ST. LOUIS — Two Centralia residents have been charged in a three-count federal indictment alleging bank fraud and identity theft in connection with stolen mail.

According to court documents, a federal grand jury indicted 36-year-old Jessica N. Smith and 26-year-old Matthew Woods last week. Smith was reportedly arrested during a traffic stop last week on the federal warrant and for alleged possession of methamphetamine and a narcotic instrument.

The indictment alleges Woods took mail that included personal checks from the mailbox of a home on Nation Road in Marion County.

It further alleges that between July of last year and January of this year both Woods and Smith used those items to defraud two area banks.

Woods is also indicted for allegedly using the checking account number of a person with the initials “KB” during and in relation to a felony offense.

Smith is scheduled to appear for arraignment today in federal court in East St. Louis and Woods is scheduled for arraignment Wednesday.
