SALEM, IL — A 34-year-old former resident of a Salem CILA home has agreed to waive a jury trial in his attempted murder case and move forward to an August bench trial in the case.

Tyler Watson was found in April to be mentally fit to stand trial for the alleged stabbing of a caregiver at the home in January.

Watson remains in custody on a half-million-dollar bond on two Class X felony charges of attempted murder and one of armed violence, along with one Class 3 felony charge of aggravated battery.

He’s waived his right to a speedy trial in the case but on Tuesday also waived his right to a jury trial and agreed to be tried by a judge in a stipulated bench trial.

In a stipulated bench trial, the defendant agrees all of the State’s live testimony will be entered.

A defendant in a stipulated-bench-trial does not, however, concede that the evidence is sufficient to convict. Instead, the defendant reserves the right to argue that the evidence as presented is not sufficient to convict.

The stipulated bench trial in the case is scheduled for August 2 in Marion County Court.
