MT. VERNON, IL — Mt. Vernon Police made two arrests overnight Monday.
According to MVPD, around 10 p.m. Monday, officers initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle at 15th and Casey. During the traffic stop an occupant of the vehicle, 19-year-old Israel Garrett, reportedly began to flee on foot. Officers were able to catch up with Garrett in the area of 15th and College and observed him discard a bag. During a search of the bag officers reportedly located a loaded 9mm handgun. Garrett was taken into custody on charges of Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon and Resisting Arrest. He was formally charged Tuesday in Jefferson County Court with misdemeanor possession of a firearm without a FOID.
Then just after 2 a.m. Tuesday, officers responded to a report of a female screaming for help a residence in 900 block of Salem Road. Upon officers’ arrival they observed a male subject, 36-year-old James Litteral, at the residence with blood on his clothing. Upon the officer’s arrival, Litteral began to flee on foot. Officers initiated a pursuit of Litteral and were able to take him into custody a few blocks away. Further investigation revealed Litteral had allegedly forced his way into a residence through a locked door. Once inside he attacked two people resulting in one of the victims being transported to a local hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening injury. Litteral was transported to the Jefferson County Jail on charges of Home Invasion, Aggravated Battery, Domestic Battery, and Resisting Arrest.
