WAYNE COUNTY — A 40-year-old Kentucky man will spend the rest of his life in prison for the December 2021 shooting death of Wayne County, Illinois Sheriff’s deputy Sean Riley.

Ray Tate was sentenced Friday afternoon in Wayne County Court to life in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Tate was originally charged with 36 counts of first-degree murder, Class X felony aggravated vehicle hijacking and Class 2 felony possession of a firearm stemming from the December 2021 shooting death of Deputy Riley.

He initially pleaded not guilty to all charges against him but agreed last month to plead guilty to one count first-degree murder.

Tate is still facing multiple charges in Missouri for various crimes he’s alleged to have committed the day he shot Deputy Riley.

He could also face additional charges in Jefferson or Wayne counties stemming from his alleged attempted escape earlier this month from the Jefferson County Jail where he was being held pending sentencing on the murder case.
