MOUNT VERNON — A 68-year-old Opdyke man is in the Jefferson County Jail following his arrest on a warrant charging him with sexually assaulting a minor.

According to Mt. Vernon Police Chief Trent Page, James Martin Sr. was wanted on a Jefferson County warrant charging him with predatory criminal sexual assault of a minor.

Chief Page says the Washington County Sheriff’s Department initially took a report on March 11 of a sexual assault that allegedly took place in Mt. Vernon.

That information was forwarded to the Mt. Vernon Police Department and their Detective Division investigated the report. It’s believed the assault took place six to seven years ago, said Chief Page.

The findings of the investigation were then forwarded to the Jefferson County State’s Attorney’s Office and a warrant for Martin’s arrest was issued.

He was picked up on the warrant in Washington County last week and was extradited to the Jefferson County Jail where he awaits the formal filing of charges in court.
