C. Jean Shelton, 84, of Opdyke, Illinois, passed away at 4:44 pm April 14, 2021 at Crossroads Community Hospital in Mount Vernon, Illinois. She was born January 22, 1937 in Mount Vernon to the late James and Flora (Harlow) Rogers. Jean married George Shelton on September 12, 1953 in Mount Vernon. They were blessed with 67 years of marriage.
In addition to her beloved husband, Jean is survived by her daughters, Karen Jean Helpingstine of Mount Vernon, Linda Kay Patterson and husband, Robert of Opdyke, Judith Joliene Shehorn and husband, Vincent of Mount Vernon, and Georgeanna Smith of Opdyke; grandchildren, Ryan Helpingstine and wife, Georgette of Indiana, Matthew Helpingstine and wife, Michelle of Mount Vernon, Aaron Helpingstine and wife, Lindsay of Walnut Hill, Illinois, Michael Helpingstine and wife, Beth of Saint Louis, Missouri, Rachel K. Cook and husband, Dale of West Frankfort, Illinois, Robert Keith Patterson and wife, Jessi of Arizona, Kelly Wayne Patterson and wife, Gema of Casa Grande, Arizona, Shannon Henry and husband, Brad of Opdyke, George Wade Shehorn and fiancée, Cassandra Huston of Mount Vernon, Larry Payton “Tres” Smith III and wife, Taylor of Ina, Illinois, Mallory Bullington and husband, Kile of Mount Vernon, and Charles Smith of West Frankfort, Illinois; twenty-five great-grandchildren; brothers, Cassell Rogers and wife, Judy of Valier, Illinois and Michael Rogers of Centralia, Illinois; sister, Dorothy Oliver of Phoenix, Arizona; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her siblings, James Rogers, Richard Rogers, Judy Kirkland, and D’Ella Scott; and sister-in-law, Carolyn Rogers.
Jean worked as a custodian for Belle Rive Grade School for 18 years. She was a faithful member of Opdyke Baptist Church. Jean was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She will be dearly missed. A Visitation will be held Sunday, April 18, 2021 from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. A Funeral Service will begin at 2:00 pm with Reverend Keith Neal officiating. Interment will follow at Opdyke Cemetery in Opdyke. Memorials may be made in Jean’s honor to Opdyke Baptist Church.
