MT. VERNON, IL — The Mt. Vernon Police Department responded Wednesday afternoon to a report of shots fired in the area of 20th and Waterworks Road. Upon officer’s arrival to the area the subjects were observed in the area North of the reservoir and observed one was still armed with a long gun. The subjects began to flee from officers in various directions.
A 15-year-old male was taken into custody in the 1800 block of Isabella while a 17-year-old male was captured north of the 1700 block of Pace. Officers began checking the area and located the rifle. No one was injured. Both juveniles were transported to the MVPD for interviews. After the interviews, the 17-year-old was released.
The fifteen-year-old was charged with Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon and Reckless Discharge of a Firearm. The juvenile was processed at the Mt Vernon Police Department and detained at Franklin County Juvenile Detention Facility pending a court appearance.
