MT. VERNON, IL — On Wednesday around 12:19pm a distraught female entered the Mt. Vernon Police Department lobby and reported a male had possibly been shot at a residence in the 1800 block of Cherry. The female also reported a male at the home had attacked her and stolen her phone.

Upon officer’s arrival they observed a subject, later identified as 30-year-old Traviel C Gibson, run into the residence. Officers also observed a deceased male on the front porch. Despite several commands, Gibson refused to cooperate and exit the house. Officers entered the residence to make contact with him. Gibson continued to resist resulting in one officer suffering minor injuries when taking him into custody.

Gibson has been incarcerated in the Jefferson County Justice Center on charges of Robbery, Felony Resisting Arrest and Obstructing a Police Officer.

The investigation is on-going.
