MT. VERNON — A Mt. Vernon woman was arrested Tuesday afternoon after police say she fled a traffic stop, crashed into a vehicle and was later apprehended on foot near the crash.
Mt. Vernon Police Chief Trent Page says that an officer tried to initiate a traffic stop on the vehicle driven by 25-year-old Christine Williams at the corner of 15th and Casey. Williams allegedly took off getting to speeds more than 20 miles per hour over the speed limit. Police terminated the chase but continued searching the area for the suspect vehicle.
Officers found the vehicle in the Litton’s lot in the 800 block of S. 17th Street after it had struck another vehicle, but the driver had already fled on foot. Williams was found around 16th and Herbert and was taken into custody. While searching the vehicle, police found meth inside.
Williams was arrested for aggravated fleeing police 21+ mph over the speed limit, leaving the scene, reckless driving, and possession of meth less than five grams. She also had a Jefferson County warrant out for her arrest for identity theft less than $300. Bond on that warrant has been set at $10,000.
Williams is currently being held at the Jefferson County Justice Center.
