EDGEWOOD, IL — Slick conditions on Interstate 57 Friday night are being blamed for an incident Friday night that led to an IDOT employee being struck by a vehicle that lost control just south of Edgewood.

According to Illinois State Police, 55-year-old James Denton of Effingham was placing flares on the roadway to warn motorists of a crash ahead when around 6:35 p.m. a vehicle being driven by 64-year-old Patrick Grauenke of Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin lost control and went off the right side of the roadway.

Grauenke was driving over a hill and bridge at the time.  His vehicle struck Denton’s legs and the guardrail.

Denton saw the car lose control, ran, and jumped over the guardrail.  He received only minor injuries.  Neither Grauenke nor Denton required hospital treatment.

Grauenke was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.
