MT. VERNON, IL — Two people were involved in a semi crash early Sunday morning on I-64 near Mt. Vernon.

According to Illinois State Police, 79-year-old William Carl Leonard was driving the semi west on I-64 at milepost 87 when he alleges that a deer ran out in front of his vehicle around 1:45 a.m.

The semi crossed the center median, crossed the eastbound lanes of I-64 and and ran off the roadway striking a barbed wire fence.

Leonard and his passenger, 76-year-old Anna Mary-Leonard – who was in the sleeper berth, were not injured. He was wearing his seatbelt. It’s not known if his passenger was wearing a seat belt.

No charges were filed. ISP did not say in the press release where the Leonard’s were from.
