FAYETTE COUNTY — A 61-year-old Vandalia man is free after posting $20,000 cash bond following a Friday arrest on charges including delivery of between 15 and 100 grams of methamphetamine.
David Carpenter was initially arrested during a traffic stop Friday on charges of Class 3 felony possession of less than 5 grams of meth and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.
During the arrest, however, the arresting deputy decided to get a search warrant for Carpenter’s Vandalia home where a quantity of meth was reportedly discovered that led to charges of Class 1 felony possession of between 15 and 100 grams of meth and Class X felony delivery of between 15 and 100 grams of meth.
According to the Fayette County State’s Attorney’s Office, Illinois statute allows for sentencing enhancements for crimes committed in a protected structure.
Carpenter reportedly had video surveillance at his residence and therefore if convicted of the charges against him he will be eligible for extended sentencing.
His bail on the original charges had been set at $15,000 but due to the results of the search warrant, his bail was increased to $200,000.
Carpenter was released from the Fayette County Jail after posting $20,000 cash bond. He’s next due in court October 29 for a first appearance on the charges in both cases.
