MCLEANSBORO – Three people are recovering after being in an accident involving two vehicles and a pedestrian Saturday morning in Hamilton County.

Illinois State Police say around 9:20 a.m., 31-year-old Jesse M. Saunders of Marion was driving his pickup truck north on County Road 600E and was stopped at the intersection with Illinois 14 while at the same time 57-year-old Paul D. Drew of Benton was driving his semi with a dump trailer attached east on Illinois 14 approaching County Road 600E.

Saunders drove forward into the path of Drew’s semi with the front of the semi striking the driver’s side of Saunders’ truck. Upon impact, Saunders truck traveled across Illinois 14 an struck a pedestrian -identified as 69-year-old Phyllis Sue Bowers of McLeansboro – on the north shoulder on Illinois 14.

An ambulance took Saunders to an area hospital. He was later flown to a regional hospital for further treatment. Drew and Bowers sustained minor injuries. An ambulance took them to an area hospital. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

Saunders was cited for failure to yield at a stop sign intersection and driving under the influence of alcohol.

ISP was assisted at the crash scene by the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department, the McLeansboro Police Department, the McLeansboro Fire Department, Harre Ambulance Service, Dave’s Towing and Bowman Auto Body and Towing.
