MT. VERNON, IL — A motion was filed Friday in Jefferson County court seeking the release of New Jersey records for a 39-year-old Mt. Vernon man charged in Jefferson County court with two counts attempted murder: one for a pregnant woman and the other for her unborn child, as well as with a felony kidnapping charge.

Victor Serrano was arrested in New Jersey in 2010 after he allegedly barricaded himself in his home, then set the house on fire following a domestic violence incident, according to local publications at that time.

Serrano allegedly had beaten a female in the house with a wooden club, and set fire to furniture on the first floor.

Officers convinced Serrano to jump to safety from a second floor window of the home and he was then taken into custody.

He was charged with aggravated arson, aggravated assault with a weapon, terrorist threats and weapons offenses.

Prosecutors in Illinois say he attacked a pregnant woman in Mt. Vernon in January 2019 before leading police on a high-speed chase that ended in Indiana.

Serrano has already pleaded guilty to charges in Indiana from that chase. He’s serving a one-year sentence while still being held in the Jefferson County Jail with bail set at $500,000.

He’s next due in court October 8th in Jefferson County court for a ruling on Friday’s motion.
