MARION COUNTY — A 44-year-old Salem man was killed Saturday morning in a motorcycle crash southwest of Salem while his 40-year-old female passenger was airlifted from the scene.
According to Marion County Coroner Troy Cannon, he pronounced Christopher Campbell dead on the scene on Selmaville Road near Nation Road.
Campbell’s passenger Amanda Charlton, of Salem, was ejected from the bike and airlifted from nearby Selmaville School to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.
Illinois State Police say preliminary details show Campbell was traveling southbound on Selmaville Road when around 9:54 a.m. he failed to reduce speed on a curve and drove off the roadway. The motorcycle struck a sign before coming to rest.
Salem Fire Protection District responded to help set up the helicopter landing zone for at Selmaville Grade School. United Medical Response transported Charlton to the medical copter. Marion County Sheriff’s deputies and Marion County ESDA also provided assistance at the scene.
Rogers-Atkins Funeral Home in Salem is assisting the Campbell family with arrangements.
