SALEM —- Salem police are investigating a shooting late Thursday night that reportedly sent a 20-year-old male to Salem Township Hospital with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

A large police presence was on the scene in the 1100 block of West Elm in Salem, with Marion County Sheriff’s deputies assisting.

Initial reports indicate the male said he was standing on the porch around 10:30 p.m. when he was shot in an apparent drive-by.

Witnesses reported a vehicle sped from the scene heading east from the residence. The victim reportedly said he did not know who shot him. He was later airlifted to a St. Louis area hospital for surgery. Salem police say that at last report, the victim was in stable condition and is expected to survive, according to a family member.

Officers were later seen in the area of the Lincoln Street Apartments where it’s believed they took 19-year-old Nathanial A. Fink into custody on charges of Attempted Murder, Aggravated Battery with a Firearm, and Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm..

Police continue to investigate the incident.
