BENTON — Illinois State Police say a defective tire caused a crash involving a car and semi on southbound I-57 in Benton around 6:30 Friday night.

According to ISP, a car, driven by a 24-year-old woman from Mississippi, was going north on I-57 at milepost 72 when a tire blew on the vehicle causing him to lose control and cross the median. The semi, driven by a 29-year-old man from Minnesota, struck the rear of the car and subsequently overturned.

The car’s driver was not hurt, but two of the three passengers in the car suffered non-life threatening injuries. A third passenger was not hurt. The semi driver also was not hurt. Everyone was wearing seat belts.

I-57 was closed for some time for investigation and cleanup and reopened a few hours later.

ISP says charges are pending investigation.
