MT. VERNON — A late Saturday morning fire destroyed a 20 by 10 foot mixing bin on the roof of the mixing building at Continental Tire in Mt. Vernon.

According to Jefferson Rural firefighters, the fire moved into some of the duct-work in that section of the plant.

The mixing area was reportedly evacuated and Continental Tire’s fire team was able to put out the fire in the duct-work inside the plant before firefighters arrived on the scene.

The Mt. Vernon Fire Department provided mutual aid with their aerial truck, which allowed firefighters to make their way to the bin that was mounted 30 feet in the air above the roof.

Woodlawn, Waltonville, and Bluford fire districts all were called for mutual aid at the scene, while Kell Firemen stood by at the Jefferson Rural Station on the south side of Mt. Vernon in the event of another fire.

Firefighters were on scene for about two hours.
