CROSSVILLE, IL — A Crossville man was lodged in the White County Jail after Crossville Police and the White County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a domestic battery between the man and his father at a home in the 100 block of South Goodman Street in Crossville late Wednesday night.
White County Sheriff Doug Meier says when he and a Crossville police officer arrived at the home, a caregiver for 86-year-old Gene L. Scarlett and his wife, 85-year-old Ferris F. Scarlett, let them inside where they saw Mr. Scarlett laying against the front door of the home. Scarlett said he and his son, 52-year-old Andy L. Scarlett, had been involved in a verbal argument and that Andy had struck him multiple times in the head with a metal cane.
Gene Scarlett suffered a large gash to the back of his head. A large amount of blood was on the floor and on Gene’s clothing. His left arm also appeared to be broken. A Crossville first responder arrived and began treating Gene. Then the Deaconess Illinois Ambulance service arrived and began treating Gene. He was taken to Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh, Indiana for further treatment.
While officers were talking to Gene Scarlett prior to him leaving for the hospital, they noticed his son walking on the back patio of the home. Meier says when he and the responding officer approached Andy Scarlett, he made a spontaneous statement that he and his father had been arguing inside the home. The responding officer placed Andy Scarlett in handcuffs. Andy stated that he understood he was being arrested for striking his father.
The officer then told Andy’s parents he was being charged with aggravated domestic battery and said an incident report would be completed and sent to the White County State’s Attorney’s office. He then advised them of the procedure for obtaining an order of protection against Andy.
Andy Scarlett was taken to the White County Jail. His bond was set at $75,000.
According to court records, he had a first appearance in court Thursday. A preliminary hearing was set for June 3 at 10 a.m.
