MT. VERNON — A 16-year-old Mt. Vernon female is in the Franklin County Juvenile Detention Facility, after she was arrested Tuesday for allegedly being in possession of a firearm.
According to Mt. Vernon police, around 3:25 Tuesday afternoon, dispatchers received a report of a vehicle traveling in the area of 19th and Casey with a female passenger displaying a handgun. The reporting person also described the vehicle and occupants.
Patrol Officers and the District 80 School Resource Officer were able to locate the vehicle and initiate a traffic stop at 25th and Conger. Upon approaching the vehicle, an officer observed a handgun in plain view.
After further investigation, the loaded firearm was determined to be stolen from a Jefferson County offense.
The female juvenile was taken into custody on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of a stolen firearm.
She was transported to the Mt Vernon Police Department for processing and detained in the Franklin County Juvenile Detention Facility.
