James Duane Alvis, 75, of Bluford, Illinois passed away at 10:20 A.M.April 30, 2019 at SSM Good Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon, Illinois. Hewas bornJuly 16, 1943 in Mount Vernon, Illinois to the late James C. Alvis and Lily Janette (Case) Alvis. He first married Nellie Greene. Later in life he married Cheryl D. Pepple on April 21, 1988 in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. They were blessed with 27 Years of marriage until he preceded her in death.
James is survived by hismother, Janette Alvis of Mount Vernon, Illinois; sons, Mike Alvis and wife, Melanie Brookman of Cisne, Illinois; three daughters, Nancy Cox and husband, Mike of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Barbara Alvis of West Frankfort, Illinois, and Shelly Alvis of Bowling Green, Kentucky; stepson, Shawn Kessel and wife, Heather of Cisne, Illinois; five grandchildren, Mikenzie Alvis, Samantha Brookman, Kori Kessel, Deana Hill, and Matthew Capps; one great granddaughter, Aubrie Capps; three brothers, Darrel Alvis and wife, Linda of North Carolina, Terry Lee Alvis and wife, Annette of Walnut Hill, Illinois, and Kevin Alvis and wife, Cindy of Benton, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews.
James was preceded in death by his father, James C. Alvis and daughter, Linda Lemon.
James was a past board member at Oakwood Cemetery. He enjoyed farming and having coffee with all his friends in Bluford. James worked as a Corrosion Technician and a Pipe Line Welder for Truck Line Gas Company. He will be missed dearly by all who knew him.
A Visitation will be held from 12:00 P.M. until 2:00 P.M. Sunday, May 5, 2019 at Newell Funeral Home at 601 South 42nd Street in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, May 5, 2019 at Newell Funeral Home with Reverend Troy Shook officiating. Interment will follow atPleasant Hill Cemetery in Rural Jefferson County, Illinois. Memorials may be made to the Oak Dale Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Illinois.
