BENTON — The Benton City Council extended for a period of not more than 90 days the contracts for Police Chief Kyle Melvin, Water and Sewer Supt. Craig Miles and Zoning Administrator David Garavalia at Monday night’s meeting.

Lee Messersmith, Ian Zane Perkins and Cathy Ann Garavalia will be sworn in and seated as new Benton City Council members along with City Commissioner Don Storey and Mayor Fred Kondritz on Monday May 6 at 6 p.m. at City Hall.

Messersmith, Perkins and Mrs. Garavalia won seats on the City Council in the recent consolidated election. They are replacing Dennis Miller, Don Wyant and Ronnie Baumgarte. They did not seek reelection. Storey and Kondritz both were reelected.

The council accepted a bid for $7,229.35 from Ellis Grove, Illinois for the old extrication material at the Benton Fire Department.

The council also hired David Booker to do the mowing of the nuisance properties.
