Recovery resumed Monday morning for the body of a 35-year-old man who is presumed drowned on the Kaskaskia River near Cowden in Shelby County.

Crews are still trying to recover the body of Wallace Darkow, Jr., of Effingham. Family members identified Darkow and say he died while saving a woman from the river after they got caught in a bad current.

Family said a dive team has found his body, but are having trouble retrieving it from the water.

The dive team was dispatched at 5:15 p.m. Saturday and a search of the river continued until midnight. Rescuers resumed the search at 8 a.m. Sunday and it continued throughout the day. They resumed recovery efforts at 8 a.m. Monday.
