An agreement has been reached in Illinois and Kentucky to keep an Ohio River ferry running through the end of September, but hours will be reduced during that timeframe.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has agreed to fund its share of Cave-In-Rock Ferry’s operations through September. IDOT has matched the funds for the same three-month time frame.

During this time, operating hours will be reduced from 16 hours to 12 hours each day. The ferry will continue to operate seven days a week, with service beginning from the Illinois shore at 6 a.m. each day. The last run each day will be from the Kentucky landing at 5:50 p.m. daily.

The Cave-In-Rock Ferry connects Kentucky Route 91 with Illinois Route 1 across the Ohio River between Crittenden County, Kentucky and Hardin County, Illinois. About 500 vehicles use the ferry to cross the river on an average day.
