DNA testing is delaying the trial of a McLeansboro man accused of the 2016 shooting death of a 45-year-old Salem man.
According to records, 24-year-old Zachery Shock is charged with first degree murder in connection with the September 30, 2016, shooting death of James Berkel at a home in McLeansboro.
Shock has been held in the White County Jail since his arrest shortly after the shooting. His bail has been set at $2.5 million.
Court reports indicate that the previously scheduled trial date has been placed on hold while a defense expert examines evidence collected in the case.
As the delay is due to the defense, it does not count against the speedy trial clock. The case is scheduled for a pre-trial hearing Thursday.
