A Shobonier man was injured in a Monday afternoon crash on Interstate 57 near Ina.

Illinois State Police reports indicate that 20-year-old Shawn S. Zimmerman was driving his Acura in the northbound lane of the highway near mile post 83 at about 4:40 p.m. Zimmerman failed to notice a semi stopped due to backed up traffic from a previous crash.

Zimmerman struck the rear of the trailer without applying the breaks.

All lanes were closed to land the medical helicopter until 5:25 p.m. when the right lane was reopened. The left lane remained closed for crash investigation and scene clean up until 6:25 p.m. when all lanes were reopened. Both vehicles were towed from the scene due to damage.

Zimmerman was flown from the scene by helicopter to a regional hospital with major injuries. The driver of the semi, 32-year-old Ryan M. Elliot of Franklin, Ill., was transported by ambulance to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Zimmerman was cited for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid a Crash.
