During a special meeting Tuesday, The Illinois Board of Higher Education voted unanimously to appoint a hearing officer to oversee the possible revocation of Morthland College’s authority to operate and grant degrees. That’s according to the Southern Illinoisan.

IBHE conducted a review of the West Frankfort-based school in September and compiled its information in a seven-page report. The report showed concerns involving the college’s financial stability, its relationship with sports academies and its record keeping. It also provides evidence of numerous violations of higher education statutes.

An IBHE spokesperson says the hearing officer appointed Tuesday will hold a hearing, at which the college will be able to defend itself. The officer in turn will then make a recommendation at the board’s June 5 meeting as to whether or not the school’s ability to operate and grant degrees should be revoked.
