MARION COUNTY — Bail has been set at $20,000 for a 36-year-old Salem man arrested over the weekend on drug and theft charges.

According to Salem police, they were questioning Samuel Hixenbaugh about his well being Sunday afternoon when he was found sleeping on a bench at the east side entrance to the Bryan Bennett Library.

Hixenbaugh reportedly gave officers permission to search his backpack and they reportedly located a syringe loaded with a substance that field tested positive for methamphetamine, along with less than 5-grams of meth, and drug paraphernalia.

A Bronze Star medal that was reported as stolen during a burglary of a storage unit in Salem was also allegedly found in the backpack.

Hixenbaugh was taken to the Marion County Jail and was formally charged in Marion County Court Monday with Class 3 felony possession of less than 5-grams of meth, and Class 4 felony theft. He’s scheduled for a September first appearance with his court appointed attorney.
