(CENTRALIA, IL) — A Saturday night fire in Centralia is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office after the home at 521 South Sycamore Street was completely destroyed and the blaze filled the air in Centralia with smoke. According to the Centralia City Fire Department, the occupants of the home, Keith Gregg, Johanna Gregg, and Katy Hoffman, all escaped the home safely; however, a family dog and six puppies were killed in the blaze. Upon their arrival, fire and smoke were seen coming from the rear of the home and quickly spread through the structure as firefighters fought with multiple roofs and ceilings that had been added over the years. Firefighters responded to the scene at 8:20 p.m. Saturday and remained on the scene until 3 a.m. Sunday. All available city firefighters were brought in to battle the blaze. Police assisted at the scene by making hydrant connections, dragging hose, crowd control and traffic control. Lifestar personnel provided firefighters with cold packs, cold wet towels, and watched vitals for signs of heat exhaustion. And ESDA provided crowd and traffic control. Heat from the fire also damaged the siding, windows, soffit, and fence of a neighboring home on South Sycamore occupied by Ed and Sherry Richards. Only the walls remain on the front portion of the home, while the back of the home was leveled. The contents of the home were also destroyed. The loss of the building and its contents is estimated at $28,000. The home is owned by Terry Alvis of Walnut Hill.
