(Harrisburg, IL)  —  If you’re imagining Snake Road in the Shawnee National Forest like a scene out of Indiana Jones, you’re not far off. Forest managers closed the road yesterday, and they say it’ll stay closed til May, to protect thousands of snakes and other reptiles that are inching their way across the pavement on their way to mate. Shawnee officials say the road is closed to cars, but is open to hikers. If you’re brave enough.
