(SALEM, IL) — A 34-year-old homeless Centralia man was arrested Tuesday night by Centralia police after they received a call from a woman claiming he had been holding her against her will. Matthew Peters was charged Wednesday in Marion County Court with Class 3 felony aggravated battery including strangling. According to police, the alleged victim had allowed Peters to stay with her, but he had choked her and held her against her will in a bedroom of her home for approximately 24 hours before she managed to escape and call police from a neighbor’s home. Bail for Peters was set at $50,000 Wednesday and he was ordered to have no contact with the alleged victim. He is next scheduled for a March 28 first appearance with his court appointed attorney.
