(NASHVILLE IL) — A Sesser man was involved in a two-vehicle crash in Washington County around 10:40 Tuesday night. According to Illinois State Police, 83-year-old Edward C. Verner was driving his minivan in the right lane going east on I-64 at milepost 57 when a car, driven by 21-year-old Morgan A. Gibson of Glen Carbon, approached rapidly from behind. Gibson struck the rear of Verner’s van causing it to leave the roadway to the right. The van went through the interstate fence and came to rest in the field. Gibson proceeded off the roadway to the left, traveled through the median and came to rest in the westbound lanes. His car caught fire and was completed damaged by fire. The westbound side of I-64 was shut down for 45 minutes. Verner suffered minor injuries and was taken by Washington County EMS to Washington County Hospital. Gibson was not hurt. Both drivers were wearing seat belts. Gibson was issued citations for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and driving while under the influence of alcohol.
