(MT. VERNON, IL) — A 24 year old Mt. Vernon woman was arrested Saturday night for charges of Driving under the Influence, Leaving the scene of accident, and child endangerment. Yakira Houston was taken to the Jefferson County Justice Center, where she was incarcerated awaiting the setting of court date and bond. Authorities with the Mt. Vernon Police Department responded to a report of a reckless driver at approximately 10:24 p.m. Saturday night that took out an interstate road sign in the 4500 block of Broadway.  The vehicle left the scene of the incident and was pursued by the reporting person, who gave information to the authorities.  Officers caught up with the vehicle at Helia Crest Apartments on South 34th Street and determined upon investigation that the driver, identified as Houston, was under the influence of alcohol.  Authorities notified DCFS for a report as there was a child present in the vehicle during the offenses and the child was released to a family member. Houston is considered innocent until proven guilty to the satisfaction of a jury in a court of law.
