(MT. VERNON, IL) — A three-semi crash on Interstate 57 Tuesday morning in Jefferson County sent one person to the hospital with minor injuries and resulted in the southbound lane of the interstate being closed for more than three hours. According to the Illinois State Police, around 8:58 a.m. 44-year-old Jeremy Pieper, of Girard, Illinois was driving a 2014 Kenworth semi northbound on I-57 near mile marker 95.5 when he suffered a medical issue that caused him to lose control and veer off the roadway. Pieper’s semi traveled onto the right shoulder and back into the northbound lanes before entering the median and crossing back into the southbound lanes. A 2007 Freightliner driven by Bret Harness, 57, of Frankfort, Indiana, was unable to stop and struck the right side of Pieper’s semi. Robert Baker, 48, of Camby, Indiana, was driving a 2015 Mack southbound just ahead of Harness and struck the rear of Harness’s second trailer.   The Kenworth and Freightliner semis were seriously damaged. All three trucks were towed from the scene.  One southbound lane of I-57 was closed until around 12:30 p.m. Both Harness and Baker were uninjured. Pieper was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. He was charged with driving while ill or fatigued due to the pre-existing medical condition.
