(BENTON, IL) — The Franklin County State’s Attorney says the investigation into last week’s attack on Benton Mayor Fred Kondritz continues and no formal charges have been filed at this time against the man who allegedly committed the attack. Evan Owens said last week Albert Smith of Benton is facing charges of aggravated battery of a public official. Smith is currently free on bond.  According to reports, Smith walked up to Kondritz and his wife after speaking to him and punched the mayor in his face last Wednesday afternoon at Fred’s Super Dollar in Benton.  Kondritz says the punch landed on his forehead and upper nose. He then called police and filed a report. Kondritz says his face was sore and he had headaches. Kondritz says he has known Smith for most of his life. Reports said last week’s incident stemmed from letters to the editor printed by the Southern Illinoisan along with the Benton Evening News that criticized Kondritz.
