(MT. VERNON, IL) — A motion to withdraw a guilty plea has been filed in the case of a 23 year old Mt. Vernon man convicted in a 2011 murder case.  Damondros James appeared in court Friday in an effort to withdraw his guilty plea for the murder of cab driver Charles Ellis.  James was one of four men charged in Ellis’ shooting during a botched robbery attempt in 2011. The 75 year old Ellis was killed in his cab during the attempt.  James’ attorney, Aaron Hopkins also requested court transcripts in the case. The new motion to withdraw has not yet been filed, and a motion hearing has been set for 1:30 p.m. on Friday February 17th.  James previously tried to file such a motion while representing himself. That motion was later withdrawn. Part of his plea deal requires him to cooperate in the prosecution of other defendants in the case. Three others were charged in the Ellis murder. Mark Taylor Jr., is awaiting trial on three counts of first-degree murder and has a pre-trial hearing set for 1 p.m. February 14th. Demandre Black pleaded guilty to aggravated battery with a firearm in October 2015 and was sentenced to 20 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Christopher Wells pleaded guilty to murder and is awaiting sentencing.
